We’re looking forward to this early November reading with a ton of great local poets as well as SHAWN PAVEY, who’ll be visiting us from Kansas!

JASON BALDINGER is a poet from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He was recently a Writer in Residence at Osage Arts Community, and is founder and co-director of The Bridge Series. He has multiple books available including the soon to be released The Better Angels of our Nature (Kung Fu Treachery) and the split books The Ugly Side of the Lake with John Dorsey (Night Ballet Press) as well as Everyone’s Alone Tonight with James Benger (Kung Fu Treachery Press). His work has been published widely in print journals and online. You can listen to him read his work on Bandcamp on lps by the bands Theremonster and The Gotobeds.

KARA KNICKERBOCKER is the author of the chapbooks The Shedding Before the Swell (Dancing Girl Press, 2018) and Next to Everything that is Breakable (Finishing Line Press, 2017). Knickerbocker is from Saegertown, Pennsylvania and currently lives in Pittsburgh, where she works at Carnegie Mellon University and is earning her MFA at Carlow University. KARLA LAMB is a multidisciplinary Chicana poet. Her work has appeared in A Women’s Thing Magazine, The Shallow Ends, Coal Hill Review, Vox Populi, Word Riot, Pittsburgh Poetry Review, Voices from the Attic, & is forthcoming in Always Crashing. Her work has also been recently nominated for the Best of the Net Anthology. Lamb is the program manager at City of Asylum, an organization that provides sanctuary to endangered writers. SHAWN PAVEY has delivered newspapers, mowed lawns, bagged groceries, cut meat, laid sewer pipe, bussed tables, washed dishes, roofed houses, crunched numbers, rented cars, worked in hotels, worn an apron at Kinko’s, and been paid to write everything from résumés to music reviews. Currently, he earns a living as an Executive Recruiter in Mission, KS where he lives with his wife and two worthless but adorable cats. He’s hosted poetry readings in bars, coffee shops, haunted houses, bookstores, libraries, front porches, seedy motel rooms, and abandoned warehouses. He is the author of Talking to Shadows (2008, Main Street Rag Press),Nobody Steals the Towels from a Motel 6 (2015, Spartan Press), and Survival Tips for the Pending Apocalypse(Spartan Press, 2019). He is a Co-founder and former Associate Editor of The Main Street Rag Literary Journal, and a former board member and officer of The Writers Place, a Kansas City-based literary non-profit. His poems, essays, and journalism appear in a variety of national and regional publications. A graduate of the University of North Carolina’s Undergraduate Honors Creative Writing Program, he likes his Tom Waits loud, his bourbon single-barrel, and his basketball Carolina Blue.

SCOTT SILSBE was born in Detroit. He now lives in Pittsburgh. His poems have been collected in three books—Unattended Fire, The River Underneath the City, and Muskrat Friday Dinner. He is also an assistant editor at Low Ghost Press.

7/11 An Accident of Blood and Severance Book Launch @ White Whale

Come Join us on July 11, as Pittsburgh poet Charlie Brice will launch his new poetry collection, An Accident of Blood, at the White Whale Bookstore, 4754 Liberty Ave., Pittsburgh, PA 15224, from 7-9 PM. Reading with Charlie will be Robert Fanning who will launch his new collection, Severance, as well as local poets Judy Brice, Kara Knickerbocker, and Robert Walicki. This event is free. Beverages will be served.

Author Bios:

Charlie Brice is a retired psychoanalyst and is the author of Flashcuts Out of Chaos (2016), Mnemosyne’s Hand (2018), and An Accident of Blood (2019), all from WordTech Editions. His poetry has been nominated for the Best in Net anthology and twice for a Pushcart Prize and has appeared in over ninety publications including The Atlanta Review, The Main Street Rag, Chiron Review, Fifth Permafrost, SLAB, The Paterson Literary Review, Muddy River Poetry Review and elsewhere.

Judy Brice is a retired psychiatrist whose love of nature and experiences with illness informs much of her work. She has had over fifty poems published in many journals and anthologies, including The Golden Streetcar, Vox Populi, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Magnolia Review, and Annals of Internal Medicine. She has received two Editor’s Choice Awards in the Allen Ginsberg Poetry Prize. She is the author of Renditions in a Palette and Overhead from Longing. Robert Fanning is the author of four books of poetry: The Seed Thieves, American Prophet, Severance, and Our Sudden Museum, as well as two chapbooks: Sheet Music and Old Bright Wheel. His poems have appeared in Poetry, Ploughshares, Shenandoah, The Atlanta Review, and other journals. He is a Professor of Creative Writing at Central Michigan University and the founder and facilitator of the Wellspring Literary Series in Mt. Kara Knickerbocker is the author of the chapbooks The Shedding Before the Swell and Next to Everything that is Breakable. She earned her BA in English from Westminster College in 2012 and is currently earning her MFA at Carlow University/Trinity College Dublin. Robert Walicki’s work has appeared in over 50 journals, including Pittsburgh City Paper, Fourth River,One, and Vox Populi. A Pushcart and a Best of The Net nominee, Robert has published two chapbooks: A Room Full of Trees (Red Bird Chapbooks, 2014) and The Almost Sound of Snow Falling (Night Ballet Press), which was nominated to the 2016 List of Books for New York City’s Poets House. His first full-length collection, Black Angels, is now available from Six Gallery Press, and his next collection, “Fountain” is forthcoming from Main Street Rag Press.

Tuesday, May 7 – Madwomen in the Attic: Introduction by Jan Beatty.
Valerie Bacharach, Doralee Brooks, Daniela Buccilli, Kara Knickerbocker, Jamilla Rice, Bernadette Ulsamer & Sarah Williams-Devereux

Valerie Bacharach’s poetry has appeared in several publications including Pittsburgh Quarterly, US 1 Worksheets, The Tishman Review, Topology Magazine, Poetica, The Ekphrastic Review, and Voices from the Attic. She is a member of Carlow University’s Madwomen in the Attic workshops and conducts weekly poetry workshops at CeCe’s Place, a halfway house for women in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction. Her first chapbook, Fireweed, was published in August 2018 by Main Street Rag.

Doralee Brooks, a Writing Project Fellow (1995), teaches at the Community College of Allegheny County where she chairs the developmental studies department. Her poems have appeared in Uppagus, Pittsburgh Poetry Review, Voices from the Attic, and The Paterson Review. Her chapbook, When Damballah Laughs, was a finalist for the 2016 Coal Hill Review Chapbook Prize. In 2017, her poem, “Trending This Fall,” was published in the anthology Nasty Women and Bad Hombres edited by Deena November and Nina Padolf. She writes with the Madwomen in the Attic poetry workshop.

Daniela Buccilli’s poetry has appeared or is forthcoming in publications that include Paterson Literary Review, Cimarron Review, Cider Press Review, US 1 Worksheets, and an anthology. She is completing her second MFA, this time in poetry. She has taught at public high schools for 25 years. Her poetry chapbook How Much It Takes To Carry will be published in 2019 by Main Street Rag. She is also working as an editor for Show Us Your Papers: A Poetry Anthology.

Kara Knickerbocker is a writer and world traveler from Saegertown, Pennsylvania and the author of the chapbooks The Shedding Before the Swell and Next to Everything that is Breakable. She is currently earning her MFA at Carlow University/Trinity College Dublin. Jamilla Rice dreams of when she can own her days and write. Until then, she squeezes out the time between being an athlete, educator, speaker, aunt, gardener, book nerd, baker, and British detective drama junkie. She’s been published in Voices from the Attic, among other anthologies and periodicals. You may have heard her read at Penguin Bookshop, White Whale Books, Delanie’s Coffee House, on WESA’s Prosody, or that random open mic in Toronto.

Bernadette Ulsamer earned an MFA from Carlow University where she is a member of Madwomen in the Attic. She is the author of the chapbook “Trestling” published by Flutter Press. Her poetry has appeared in Pittsburgh City Paper, The Main Street Rag, Cossack Literary Journal, Roar Magazine, The Broken Plate, Meat For Tea: The Valley Review, and has been anthologized in Voices from the Attic, and Along These Rivers.

Sarah Williams-Devereux is a poet and teacher of writing. Her poetry has appeared in Snapdragon: A Journal of Art & Healing, Sampsonia Way Magazine, Pittsburgh City Paper; the anthologies Pittsburgh Love Stories and Nasty Women & Bad Hombres; and WESA-FM’s Prosody. She leads poetry workshops for the Madwomen in the Attic. She is certified in writing group leadership from Amherst Writers & Artists and volunteers for the Transformative Language Arts Network. She is pursuing her MA in teaching writing from Johns Hopkins University.

Come help us celebrate the release of Issue 5, with readings from Daniela Buccili, Ava C. Cipri, George David Clark, Angele Ellis, Mike Good, Kara Knickerbocker, Deena November, Zana Previti, and Vivian Wagner.

The event will begin with an informal social hour at 6 PM, with readings beginning promptly at 7. Beer, wine, and snacks will be provided. Copies and subscriptions of the Review will available for sale.
